How to Get a Nikah Nama Translated for a UAE Spouse Visa
What a UAE spouse visa file needs from your Nikah Nama, why attestation must come before translation, which columns cause rejections, and how to photograph the form so nothing gets sent back.

A UAE spouse visa comes down to proving a marriage happened. In Pakistan, that proof is a pre-printed Urdu form filled in by hand, often years ago, sometimes by someone with difficult handwriting.
Everything else in the file is straightforward by comparison. This guide covers what the file needs, the order things have to happen in, and the specific mistakes that send Pakistani applicants back to the start.
What the file usually contains
Requirements differ by emirate, by sponsor, and by visa category, so your checklist beats this list. That said, a Pakistani spouse visa file for the UAE typically involves:
- NADRA computerised marriage registration certificate — the state record of the marriage
- Nikah Nama — the marriage contract itself, frequently requested alongside
- Passport copies for both spouses
- Sponsor’s documents — residence visa, Emirates ID, employment contract or salary certificate, tenancy contract
- Medical and Emirates ID steps completed after arrival
The document work concentrates on the first three. The rest is the sponsor’s side.
Nikah Nama or NADRA certificate?
These are two different documents and people conflate them constantly.
The Nikah Nama is the marriage contract, signed at the time of the nikah, registered with the nikah registrar. It is a numbered form recording the parties, witnesses, dower, and any conditions.
The NADRA computerised marriage registration certificate is the state’s record, issued later, in a standard machine-printed format.
Most UAE checklists want the NADRA certificate, because it is standardised and verifiable. Many also want the Nikah Nama. If you do not have the NADRA certificate, start that process first, because it takes time you have not budgeted for and everything else waits on it.
The order, and why it is not negotiable
This is where UAE files fail most often, and it has nothing to do with translation quality.
- Obtain the documents — NADRA certificate and the original Nikah Nama
- Attestation chain on the originals — MOFA, then UAE embassy attestation in Islamabad
- Translation — after the stamps exist
- Submission — through the sponsor or a typing centre in the UAE
Attestation stamps are physically applied to the original document. A translation prepared before those stamps exist cannot contain them. When someone places your translation next to your attested original, the endorsements they are specifically checking for are missing from the translation.
At best you pay for the translation twice. At worst the file is returned and you lose an appointment.
Our MOFA attestation checklist sets out the full chain, including which body attests what before MOFA will accept it.
The exception: some sponsors and typing centres ask for the Arabic translation at a specific earlier point. If your checklist says that, follow the checklist, and tell your translator so the document can be reissued once the final stamps are on.
Arabic or English?
Both are asked for, depending on who is receiving the file.
Many UAE government submissions require Arabic. Some free-zone employers and multinational sponsors accept English. The typing centre handling the application in the UAE will usually know which.
This matters because the two are priced differently, English to Arabic starting higher than Arabic to English, and ordering the wrong direction means doing it again. Ask before you order. One message to the sponsor saves a repeat job.
Why the Nikah Nama is hard to translate well
It is a pre-printed government form with numbered columns, completed by hand. A translator who converts it into flowing English paragraphs has made it harder to verify, because the person reading it is looking for a specific column, not a narrative.
Done properly, the translation reproduces the form: the column number, the printed Urdu heading rendered in English, and the handwritten entry. Blank columns are marked blank. Illegible entries are marked illegible rather than guessed at.
The columns that cause rejections
Columns 13 to 17 cover prompt and deferred dower, any special conditions attached to the marriage, and whether the right of divorce was delegated to the wife.
These get left out of poor translations for two reasons. They are often the hardest to read, being longer handwritten entries in legal Urdu. And clients sometimes ask for them to be omitted because the amounts feel private.
They are part of the contract. Their absence is visible to anyone who knows the form, and it raises exactly the question you do not want raised about a marriage document.
How to photograph a Nikah Nama
Most delays we see start here, not in the translation.
- Daylight, not flash. Flash blows out the printed lines and reflects off the registrar’s stamp.
- Flat surface, camera parallel. Photographing at an angle distorts the columns.
- All four corners in frame, including the margins, which often carry endorsements.
- Every page, both sides where anything is printed or stamped on the back.
- The witness section and registrar’s stamp, in focus, not cropped.
- A separate close-up of any column where the handwriting is faint.
If a column is unreadable in your photograph, it will be unreadable to us. We would rather ask than guess.
Send the passports with it
Names must be transliterated to match the passports being submitted, not spelled by ear. The same Urdu name can be romanised several defensible ways, and defensible is not the standard, matching is.
Send passport copies for both spouses with the translation job. If either of you has an existing UAE document, a prior visa or Emirates ID with your name in Arabic, send that too. Consistency with your existing record beats a theoretically better spelling every time.
This is the most common avoidable rejection on the entire file, and it costs nothing to prevent.
Realistic timeline
The translation is the fast part, usually within standard turnaround, with 24-hour delivery available at 1.5x to 2x if you have a date booked.
Everything around it runs on other people’s schedules. Obtaining a NADRA certificate if you do not hold one, then each attestation step, is measured in weeks. Start as early as the decision is made rather than when the sponsor asks.
Common mistakes, in order of frequency
- Translating before attestation. Covered above. The expensive one.
- Name spellings that do not match the passports. Free to prevent, sends the file back.
- Sending only the first page of the Nikah Nama.
- Omitting the dower or conditions columns.
- Assuming the Nikah Nama alone is enough when the checklist wants the NADRA certificate.
- Ordering English when the submission needs Arabic, or the reverse.
- Poor photographs that force guesswork or a re-shoot.
- Starting a month before travel. The chain does not compress.
What we do
We translate the Nikah Nama, the NADRA marriage certificate, passports, and supporting affidavits, between Urdu, English, and Arabic. Send the set together and names stay consistent across every document in the file, which is what the reviewing officer is checking.
We do not perform attestation, represent clients at MOFA or the UAE embassy, or promise acceptance. Acceptance is decided by the receiving authority under its own rules. What we can do is stop you translating at the wrong point in the sequence.
See Nikah Nama translation for the service detail, or our fuller guide to Nikah Nama translation in Pakistan for the document itself. For the wider Gulf document set, see Saudi, UAE, and Qatar document translation.
Send the Nikah Nama, the passports, and your checklist on WhatsApp, and we will tell you what the file needs before you spend anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the Nikah Nama or the NADRA marriage certificate for a UAE visa?
Most UAE spouse visa checklists want the NADRA computerised marriage registration certificate, and many want the Nikah Nama alongside it. They are different documents, the Nikah Nama being the marriage contract signed at the time and the NADRA certificate being the state record. Get both attested and translated unless your sponsor's checklist explicitly says otherwise.
Should the Nikah Nama be translated before or after attestation?
After. Attestation stamps go on the original document, so a translation prepared beforehand will not show them, and the officer comparing translation to original sees a mismatch. Translating first is the most common way people pay for the same translation twice on a UAE file.
Does the translation need to be in Arabic or is English enough?
It depends on where the file is being submitted and by whom. Many UAE government submissions require Arabic, while some free-zone and multinational sponsors accept English. Confirm with the sponsor or the typing centre handling the application before ordering, because the two are priced differently and the wrong one has to be redone.
How long does the whole process take?
The translation itself is fast, usually within standard turnaround. The chain around it is not. Getting a NADRA certificate if you do not have one, then attestation at each stage, is measured in weeks rather than days and depends entirely on other people's schedules. Start as early as you can.
My Nikah Nama is old and the handwriting is faded. Is that a problem?
It is the single most common complication. Send the clearest daylight photographs you can of every column including the margins. Where an entry genuinely cannot be read we mark it illegible rather than guessing, because a guess on a dower or conditions column is exactly what gets a file returned.
Which columns cause the most rejections?
Columns 13 to 17, covering prompt and deferred dower, any special conditions, and whether the right of divorce was delegated. They are frequently left out of poor translations, either because they are hard to read or because they feel private. They are part of the contract and their absence is visible.
How should names be spelled in the translation?
Exactly as they appear on the passports being submitted, not phonetically. Send passport copies for both spouses with the job. A mismatch between the translated Nikah Nama and the passport is the most common avoidable rejection on the whole file.
Does the Nikah Nama need to be certified or notarized too?
UAE files usually want attestation rather than notarization, with a certificate of translation accuracy often expected alongside. Requirements differ by emirate, by sponsor, and by visa category. Send us the checklist you were given and we will tell you which combination it actually calls for.
What does Nikah Nama translation cost?
Nikah Nama and marriage document translation starts from Rs. 3,000, with the final figure depending on legibility and whether certification is required. If you are translating the NADRA certificate and passports in the same file, send them together and we will quote the set.
Can you handle the attestation for me?
No. Attestation is a government process you or an authorised agent must complete. We translate the documents and tell you where translation belongs in your particular sequence. Anyone promising to speed up or guarantee an attestation outcome is selling something they cannot deliver.
